Tarragona Cuisine:
Excellent local produce, like calots (which are long and tender sweet onions) are the main ingredients of traditional dishes like leeks in Roman vinaigrette and calçotada, which is made by roasting the calçots, letting the outer layers burn and then dipping the inner layers of the bulb, which become white and soft, in an original sauce called salvitxada.
The amanidas are simple salads made with lettuce, tomato, curly endive, bell peppers, celery, etc. "Illustrated" salads are made with white or black Catalan sausage, hard-boiled egg, anchovies, fried bacon, cured ham and locally-grown nuts, always dressed with a good arbequina olive oil from Baix Ebre or Siurana.
Rice casserole, rossejat (oven-baked rice or pasta dish) and black rice (made with squid in its ink), plus rice dishes made with fish, vegetables, chicken or rabbit, make up an excellent repertoire to choose from, all with the excellent quality of the rice from Delta del Ebro.
About the Area
Tarragona's position, right on the Costa Daurada, invites you to tour a coast of calm, shallow waters, ideal for families with small children and with some excellent golden-hued beaches.
Places like Calafell, Torredembarra and Altafulla combine historic buildings with a large number of holiday accommodation on the shores of the Mediterranean. Towns like Salou and Cambrils and the Delta del Ebro Natural Park, beside clear waters, also offer a famous culinary tradition and beautiful protected areas. The theme park of Port Aventura is nearby. You can also visit the Iberian village of Moleta del Remei, declared an historic-artistic monument, in the municipality of Les Cases d´Alcanar. In addition, to the cultural attractions, the area is popular for low environmental impact sports and all kinds of activities in the water.
Inland, the province offers the important monumental site formed by the Modernist buildings of the Plaza de Prim and the Casa Navás in Reus. Declared an historic-artistic site because of its medieval, Baroque, Renaissance and Modernist architecture, Tortosa is another popular destination for visitors.
Its Parador de Turismo, the castle of Zuda (or Suda), is a National Monument and an exceptionally good choice of a place to stay in the fertile valley of the Ebro.
Meanwhile, the Cistercian Monastery Route, takes you to get to know the monasteries of Santes Creus and Poblet in the province of Tarragona, the latter declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
