Leon Cuisine:
Castilla y Leon cuisine is hearty fare, suited to the colder climate of Northern Spain. Popular dishes usually contain generous portions of red meat, vegetables and potatoes. Lamb dishes abound, so do variations of roast suckling pig. A favourite local dish is cocido castellano, a hearty cholesterol-laden meal containing ham, beef and sausage - truly carnivorous fare indeed!
The verdant mountain pastures of this area produce rich milk and meat, making superb cheese and butter and the Iberico bellota ham is well worth sampling. The delicious, locally caught trout is celebrated in an annual cooking competition, held during the International Trout week. Try the local cuisine of the Bierzo region, with their popular dish of sausage, potato and ham with turnip tops and octopus.
About the Area
The Pulchra Leonina, the "Sistine Chapel" of Spanish Romanesque architecture and the old Hospital de San Marcos are the key points of this former Roman encampment.
Over the course of time, Leon became the capital of the kingdom in the Middle Ages, a historic enclave on the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela and a city perfectly suited to its inhabitants.
The incredible natural landscape of this province is mirrored by the Picos de Europa National Park, the area of Las Médulas (a World Heritage Site) and the winter resort of San Isidro. A delightful experience with superb opportunities to sample a variety of Leon's gastronomy.
