About The Area:

Nestled within the great Sierra Nevada mountain range, Granada itself is a jewel of many facets.  From the labyrinth of tiny streets filled with produce from the Arab world, to the Florentine cafe-dominated squares, with the world famous Moorish Alhambra Palace to complete the mood, Granada enthralls its visitors.

Because it was the last city reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, Granada has an unmistakable Arab flavour.  Its cuisine, crafts and urban layout are a consequence of the city's glorious history.

Fountains, viewpoints and Carrmenes, the villas surrounded by gardens typical of the city, add to Granada's unforgettable charm.  Not in vain was one of its oldest districts, the Albaicin, declared a World Heritage Site, together with the Alhambra and the Generalife.

An important cultural centre for centuries, both during Muslim and Christian rule, nowadays the city boasts an enviable calendar of cultural and leisure events.  Old Renaissance palaces are home to seminars, conferences and debates, while the most innovative infrastructures are ready for the bigger events.

Granada Attractions

Catedral and Capilla Real - Plaza de la Lonja.  This ornate Renaissance cathedral with a beautiful altar is one of Spain´s architectural highlights.  Building of the cathedral began in 1521 and was completed in 1714.  The cathedral is famous for its beautiful facade, and gold-and-white interior.

Casa de Castril - Carrera del Darro 41.  This is one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Granada, it´s Plateresque facade, dating back to 1539, was made by Diego de Siloe.  The palace was converted into a museum in 1869, and it houses a collection of artefacts that were found in the area.  The most famous exhibit is the collection of Egyptian alabaster vases that were dug up in Almunecar.

Monasterio Cartuja - Camino de Alfacar.  Located just out of town, this 16th century monastery is another sight worth checking out when in Granada.  The baroque monastery houses a number of religious works of art and a famous collection is of paintings by Bocanegra.  There are occasional guided tours on offer at the monastery.

The Alhambra - last bastion of the Moors in Spain:  wander through the remains of this breathtaking palace with stunning lattice work, Moorish architecture, fountains and pools.  Surrounded by acres of beautiful gardens, the Alhambra is a must for any visitor.

Granada Airport is an interesting airport to travel to and gives good access to some unknown parts of Andalucia. Apart form the City of Granada and Alhambra Palace, from here you are within easy reach of the Costa Tropical with towns such as Motril, Almunecar, Salobrena, La Herradura.

This airport also gives very easy access to Europe's southern most ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains and I believe that both Monarch and Ryanair have made a good move in securing routes to Granada.
