About The Area:
The town of Ciudad Real was founded Alfonso X in 1255. It was originally named Pozuelo de Don Gil and was later changed to Villa Real.
The aim of the founding of Ciudad Real was to establish a centre of power which was located in the territories dominated by the Order of Calatrava.
The people of Ciudad Real experienced an abandunce of great prosperity during the 15th century, which was then followed by destruction through plague and hunger, which decimated the local population.
Ciudad Real was named the capital of the province in 1883, which ultimately boosted the population and ensured a multiplication in the economic importance of the town.
Ciudad Real Attractions
Cathedral of Santa Maria of the Prado - The cathedral was originally built in 1531 on the grounds of a previous temple. The cathedral features a magnificent altar piece which was designed and created by Giraldo de Mer. The artwork portrays an image of the Virgin of the Prado.
Church of Santiago - The temple is situated in the old city and dates back to the 13th century. It features three ships and a romanica window. The church also features a statue of the Virgin and boy which dates back to the 13th century.
Provincial Museum - The Provincial Museum was erected during the 19th century and is home to a magnificent collection of artwork executed by the most important Manchegos artists.

Shopping in Ciudad Real is generally a very pleasurable experience. There is a good selection of small family-run shops where you can acquire almost anything that your heart desires.
There is also an excellent selection of markets, from which visitors can obtain fresh produce, as well as a variety of arts/crafts and souvenirs. Leather work is one of the traditional craft items on offer in this region.
